With this display of quilts, we are spotlighting the works of TBQ member, Mary Jane Steinhilpert, who moved to Prescott three years ago from California. She made her first two quilts in 1960...and then life got in the way.  In 1988, in a new life in Alaska, she got back to quilting, and hasn’t slowed down since!  We hope you enjoy Mary Jane’s wide range of quilting talent!

Standing at the Reception Desk, looking South out the front door, beginning with the first small quilt in the southwest corner, and going around the room clockwise, here’s a description of Mary Jane‘s quilts:

(small quilt location--southwest corner)

“Rhapsody in Blue” ~ Made with music fabric included in a fabric pack of blues , this quilt was made in 2003 with the “Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild” of Clear Lake, CA.

(Large Quilts on the West wall):

“My Stars” ~ Made in 1997 with the most popular color for quilts (blue!), this quilt was hand quilted by the ladies of a Shreveport, LA, Methodist church.

“Cara’s Wedding Quilt” ~ Made of 30’s reproduction fabrics, the pattern for this quilt appeared as a series in McCall’s Quilting magazine over a six month time span.  It is for Mary Jane’s granddaughter, Cara, who was born March 7, 2009!

“Levon’s Wedding Quilt“ ~ The pattern for this scrap quilt is “Lover’s Link”.  It was machine quilted by a friend in Alaska. Levon is 6. J

(small quilt location--northwest corner)

“Mini Sampler” ~ This was a year long project with a small group that only made miniature quilts.  Participants received one or two patterns each month, and made the blocks using their own fabrics.  There is both hand and machine quilting in this quilt.  It was completed in 2005.

(small quilt location--northeast corner)

“Turning Leaves” ~ This quilt, made of batik fabrics, uses a “raw edge applique” technique.  Mary Jane machine quilted this quilt in 2006.

(Large quilts on East Wall):

“Cabin Fever” ~ This quilt includes an upholstery fabric and uses a technique called “Stack & Whack”.  It was made in 2006 for the cabin in Alaska.

“Cory’s Divorce Quilt” ~ Cory got married during the time when Mary Jane wasn’t quilting.  When he got divorced, he asked for a quilt.  Mary Jane was able to purchase the 9 yards of fabric for this quilt from TBQ’s “Company Store” at $1.00 per yard!  Her name for this quilt is “When the Shit Hit the Fan”!  Machine quilted in sections--completed in August 2009.

“Pine Burr” ~ This quilt was made for their condo in Mexico in 1998, and was hand quilted by the ladies of the Shreveport, LA, Methodist Church.

(small quilt location--southeast corner)

“Mended Hearts” ~ Made of yellow and blue fabrics acquired via a mail-order fabric of the month club, this quilt pattern was taught by a quilter in Mary Jane’s small group.  It utilizes a ’quilt as you go’ technique.
